Privacy
Your privacy, in plain words.
The short version
- No account, no ads, no advertising ID. No data is sold.
- Interlude never reads what is on your screen: not your messages, not the videos, not what you type.
- What you do in the app stays on your phone. Usage statistics, without your name or e-mail, are sent only if you accept, and you can change your mind at any time.
- A message to the team is sent only when you tap “Send”.
- If the app crashes, a technical report is sent so we can fix the bug (without your name, your apps or what you write). You can turn it off in Settings.
Who is responsible
The data controller is Sefiane Makhoukh, individual entrepreneur (French micro-entreprise), 173 rue de Courcelles, 75017 Paris. Interlude is published under the name “plazane” on Google Play.
A question or a request: contact@athlom.net.
What stays on your phone
This information is kept in Interlude's private space on your phone. It does not leave it, apart from the usage statistics described below if you accept them.
- the apps you chose to watch, and each one's mode (videos or time);
- the number of videos watched and the time spent in those apps, day by day, for 90 days at most;
- your pauses and your choices (close, read, continue);
- the texts you opened or read, your quiz answers and the review schedule;
- what you write yourself: your message to your future self, your goals, your ideas for instead of scrolling;
- your settings.
Everything is erased when you uninstall the app, or clear its data in Android's settings.
If you turn it on (the “Back up my data to my Google account” switch in Settings, off by default), this information is also copied by your phone's Google backup, kept by Google in your account, encrypted. We have no access to it. If you turn it off, nothing more leaves and the copy is removed at the next backup.
Android permissions
The accessibility service
Interlude uses it to know which of the apps you chose has just opened, and to see that a screen is scrolling, without knowing what it shows. This is what makes it possible to count videos and show the pause. It does not read the content of the screen, and it keeps no trace of what you do in those apps, apart from the number of videos and the time. An explanation appears in the app before you turn it on yourself in Android's settings. You can turn it off whenever you want.
Usage access (optional)
It gives the time spent in each app, to compare before and after Interlude. The calculation is done and stays on your phone.
Notifications (optional)
For the reminders you choose: the reading appointment, the weekly summary, an alert if the pause stops working, and the sound controls.
Calm sounds
The background sound starts only if you start it. It keeps playing when you leave the app, with a notification to pause or stop it.
Battery and autostart (depending on the brand)
On some phones (Xiaomi, Samsung, OPPO, vivo…), Interlude asks you to set its battery use to “No restrictions”, and on Xiaomi to turn on its “Autostart” (elsewhere, its equivalent). These settings give Interlude access to no data at all: they only stop the phone from putting the pause to sleep or shutting it down.
Interlude does not access your location, your contacts, your microphone, your camera or your photos.
What can leave, and when
1. Usage statistics: only if you accept
The question is asked once, after the first text you read. Nothing is ticked in advance, nothing leaves before your “yes”, and the “Share my stats, without my name” switch in Settings lets you stop at any time.
If you accept, Interlude sends to Google Analytics for Firebase: the texts seen, opened and read, quiz results, your 👍 and 👎, your choice on the pause screen, the fact that you added or finished an idea (never its text), the steps of the setup, and your totals for the day (number of videos, time). Never the names of your apps, your message to your future self, the text of your ideas, or what is shown on your screen.
Google adds what any measurement tool receives: an identifier specific to this installation of Interlude (not an advertising ID, which is turned off), the phone model, the Android version, the language and the approximate country. This data does not tell us who you are, but it is linked to that installation identifier: under the GDPR it is pseudonymous, not anonymous.
Legal basis: your consent. Retention: 14 months at most.
2. New texts
From time to time (once a day at most), Interlude downloads new texts from Interlude's public database, hosted by Google in Europe. The app sends no data about you: as with any website or app, your IP address is seen by the server in order to reply. Legal basis: the legitimate interest of running the app.
3. Checking that it is the real app
So that only the real Interlude, installed from Google Play, can read the texts and send a message, the app uses Firebase App Check and Google Play Integrity. Google confirms that the app is genuine and sends a check token, with a Firebase installation identifier and general information about the phone (model, Android version). Legal basis: the legitimate interest of protecting the service against abuse. This data is processed by Google on our behalf; we do not read it.
4. Your message to the team
“Something wrong? Write to us” (in Settings) sends nothing until you tap “Send”. The message contains:
- what you wrote;
- your e-mail address, only if you give it, so that we can reply;
- technical information, only if you tick the box (never ticked in advance): the make and model of the phone, the Android and Interlude versions, the language, whether the pause is turned on, whether battery use is unrestricted for Interlude, whether usage access is granted, the watched apps with their mode, and the last error of the pause (the type of error, the place in the code, the time and the version). The “See what is sent” link shows the exact list before you send.
The “What wasn't right?” card, after a 👎, follows the same rule: nothing leaves before you tap “Send”. It contains the text's name, the reason you chose, your comment if you wrote one and the Interlude version, no email.
It is stored in Europe (Google Firestore, Paris) and is used to reply to you and fix the app. Legal basis: your request, made by sending it. Retention: one year at most. Write to us to have your message deleted sooner.
5. If you installed Interlude from a shared link
Google Play keeps the original link, and Interlude reads it once, on your phone, to open the shared text. It is not sent anywhere.
6. Crash reports
If Interlude crashes, or if the pause catches an error and keeps going, a report is sent through Google Firebase Crashlytics. It contains the place in the code where it happened (the stack trace), the phone model, the Android and Interlude versions, and an identifier specific to this Crashlytics installation. Never your watched apps, what you write, your letter or your ideas, nor what is on your screen.
It is only used to find and fix bugs. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in making the app work, never advertising. Crashlytics keeps reports for 90 days. It is on by default, and you turn it off in Settings: “Send crash reports”. Development versions send nothing.
What we don't do
- No ads, no selling or renting of data.
- No advertising ID.
- No profile of you, no automated decision about you.
- No account and no password.
Who receives data
Google (Firebase: Analytics, Crashlytics, App Check, Firestore and Hosting) processes the data described above on our behalf, under its data processing terms, which include standard contractual clauses for any transfer outside the European Union. Google Play, through which the installation goes, applies its own rules. We pass this data to no one else.
Your rights
You can ask for access to your data, its correction or erasure, the restriction of or an objection to its processing, its portability, and you can withdraw your consent. Write to contact@athlom.net: we reply within one month at most.
Two points. To find a message, give the e-mail address you had entered or the approximate date you sent it. The statistics carry neither your name nor your e-mail: we cannot find “your” data in them, but you can stop them from Settings, and you start from zero by clearing the app's data.
If you think your rights are not being respected, you can also contact the CNIL, the French data protection authority (cnil.fr), or the one in your own country.
Delete your Interlude data
- What is on your phone: uninstall Interlude, or clear its data (Android Settings › Apps › Interlude › Storage › Clear data). Everything disappears at once.
- A message sent to the team: write to contact@athlom.net with the subject “Delete my Interlude data”, and the e-mail address you gave or the date you sent it. The message, the e-mail and the technical information are deleted within a month; nothing is kept. Without a request, they are deleted after one year.
- Usage statistics: turn off “Share my stats, without my name” in Settings. The ones already sent are linked only to an installation identifier, never to your name, and Google erases them after 14 months at most.
- Crash reports: turn off “Send crash reports” in Settings. The ones already sent are linked only to a Crashlytics installation identifier, and are erased after 90 days.
Children
Interlude is for people aged 13 and over. We do not seek to collect data about younger children.
The website
This website uses no cookie, no script and no measurement tool. Its host, Google Firebase Hosting, keeps the usual technical logs of a server (IP address, page requested).
Changes
If what leaves the phone changes, this page will be updated before the new version of the app, with its date at the top.
